Interview With AcreScout.com on Commercial Real Estate & The Web

One of my recent Twitter connections has been with Kent Shaffer. Kent is one of the founders of AcreScout.com, a commercial real estate portal. Commercial RE has always lagged behind the residential space when it comes to the web and its full potential as a business and marketing tool. I'm not aware of any notable moves to a web 2.0 model in the industry, including the biggest player, Loopnet, who operates under a basic search model. The goal of AcreScout is to develop a Trulia style platform along with a mobile tools and integration of social networking connections within their system.
Kent and I had a great conversation about the state of the web and commercial RE and AcreScout's ambitious business model. Enjoy!

Mike -
I liked your podcast about commercial real estate and the web. There definitely is little web 2.0 innovation in the commercial real estate industry. At LoopNet, we're constantly thinking of how web technology can play a bigger role in the CRE industry so I appreciate you calling for more and putting pressure on us to deliver.

Commercial real estate lags mostly, in my opinion in the internet info space because, most commercial brokers believe they methodically work through the same clients as their competition so they don't really wnat to share as well. Lately when the market got tough or the cap rates are only for imaginary buyers do they seem to share. Sorry if I sound negative, but I did commercial for a long time and that was always what I felt.
Great blog Mike. We too are based here in Texas and we would love for you to contact us.
www.SpacePlace.net long ago recognized this need to take CRE to the next level while also eliminating outdated listings and overly priced susbcription fees. Heck, we got rid of subscription altogether! SpacePlace actually started when all our CRE friends and colleagues continuously found flaws with the services offered by the huge, publicly traded listing services out there. Too pricey, listings are always dated, can't connect with others easily, sharing of information is either too difficiult or costly, etc. These are some of the reasons we founded www.SpacePlace.net.
Join us today at www.SpacePlace.net as we welcome you to the commercial real estate revolution. as we are about to launch the world's most powerful CRE site ever. Welcome to CRE 2.0. Team SpacePlace.
Again Mike, we'd love to have a fellow Texan talk to us about what we are doing, especially given the extreme Web 2.0 and 3.0 technology we will deliver in this new platform about to launch.
We hope to talk soon Mike.
